Carlin Hall is proud to collaborate with all the top five global executive search firms. Ben Shane-Stone tells us about a recent placement that he made at one of the top five executive search firms.
Ben, tell us about your client…
My client is delivering C-Level roles on an international basis. They assist international and domestic companies develop leaders, assess business processes, and recruit new executives. They also provide leadership advisory and executive recruiting services.
What was the role they were looking to fill?
It was a Research Associate to support their Financial Services practice, with a particular focus on Private Equity.
How did you start the process?
I began mapping the businesses competitors, identifying suitable candidates who could either move from another Tier 1 or individuals who could make a step up in their career from a Boutique style business. Our client is very keen on people coming from related industries so I took it into consideration during the headhunting process.
What candidates did you identify?
I identified and put forward three candidates – two from a Search background and one from an Investment Banking background who was keen to move into the Executive Search industry. The client invited two of the candidates for the interview. It was a seven-stage process.
How did you support the candidates during the process?
I provided guidance, support and preparation before each meeting, adjusting the advice depending on whom the candidate was meeting. This varied from Researcher level, all the way up to Managing Partner. The candidate from the Investment Banking background had the immediate edge, showing excellent interview style and excellent knowledge.
I also provided detailed feedback consistently throughout the process, liaising with Senior Partner’s of a leading Executive Search constantly attempting to maintain the momentum through to the final stages.
What happened next?
The candidate then reached the final stage, which involved presenting a 30-minute case study to a panel of Partners. I discussed the best approach, aligned with their expectations based on previous dealings with this client. The candidate successfully delivered an excellent presentation, providing clear assessment on each of his points.
What was the outcome?
The client moved to offer stage, whom were in direct competition with several businesses. I managed to successfully negotiate a deal. It was a long-winded, complicated process.
Why were the negotiations complicated?
The candidate wasn’t sure whether a Boutique firm would be the best platform for faster progression or whether he wanted a larger business where he would gain less exposure, but from a long-term perspective, a much better business for career development. Finally, after long discussions with the candidate, I persuaded him to join our client. He is still there to this day – enjoying every minute.
